Autumn Adventures - puns, rhymes and keeping it real.

So many things to explore in the Fall make for learning opportunities and adventures in everything we do!  We talk a lot about rhymes and puns these days.  Just today, on our walk, we found a hidden ivy maze. After we were back on the regular trail, Brant looked up at me with bright eyes shining and said, "that was a-MAZE-ing!"

Trying to keep the spark alive in our home school sometimes means thinking outside the box and also recognizing when these young minds are getting restless.  The monotony can set in quickly in a tiny space with limited outside-world interaction in these COVID times, let's be real.  I'm finding that that's the beauty of home school though - when we need to mix things up, it ain't no thang. We just mix it up.  Sometimes, literally...

Craft days (more to come on our Halloween Crafts soon) and having school outside whenever the mood strikes, really help keep us all engaged and much happier.  Sometimes it's a simple as gathering our own sticks to investigate or even creating a make-shift space on the porch.

Last week, we ended up having cider and snacks on the porch because Brant wanted to sit and watch for hummingbirds.  The kids did some journaling. We learned about the life of Aesop and how his fables began (they love hearing Aesop's Fables). We read this book called "Hooway for Wodney Rat" by Helen Lester that addresses bullying and accepting ourselves - strengths and weaknesses, and all. The kids and I have also started talking about how to write stories and the important parts that make up a story.

Even making hummingbird nectar created a great chance to learn about fractions and biology.
This was an unplanned, pajama lesson one morning before I went to work!

Sephy made a special friend.

Great Dr. Suess rhyming game

And sometimes, you just have to get dressed up and go for a walk or pop in and startle the ba-jeezus out of Grandma!

Variety makes all the difference.  I'm lucky I've got two great adventurers who make every day unique and special.

Indigenous People's Day
We covered a great deal of history, humanity, geography and music too.

What makes us smile?

Sharing, Piper, Rain + Sun = Rainbows!!, Rainbow School, Winnie the Pooh, Adventures, Hamburgers, Burritos, Mac n Cheese, and Cookies.

New Materials always brighten up our day:
Thank you "Teacher Ali" for these sweet treasures - a beautifully illustrated book of "Woodland Folk" and a new puzzle that joined our school room!

And birthdays too!
TRex and The Rebels made their one show debut before disbanding to wish our buddy Ancil a happy 6th birthday!  It was rockin' while it lasted.

Play on. Rock on. Learn on. Love on.

Pumpkin Patch!

No Fall is complete without a visit to a pumpkin patch!  We tried a new one this year - Wood's Farm -much smaller, skipped the crowds and had a great afternoon.

Complete with a spooky pumpkin village and corn maze.

A rare and beautiful Corn-Maze Fairy spotting...

This kid can figure out a maze like nobody's business.  He was in and out of this one in 2 turns.
